Dental Crowns
What Is A Crown?
A crown is used to entirely cover or “cap” a damaged tooth. Besides strengthening a damaged tooth, a crown can be used to improve its appearance, shape, or alignment. A crown can also be placed on top of an implant. Porcelain or ceramic crowns can be matched to the color of your natural teeth. Porcelain bonded to a metal shell is often used because it is both strong and attractive. Other materials used include gold and metal alloys. These metals are generally stronger than porcelain and may be recommended for back teeth.
Why Do I Need A Crown?
A crown may be recommended to:
- Replace a large filling when limited tooth structure remains
- Restore a fractured tooth
- Cover a tooth that has had root canal therapy
- Cover a dental implant
- Cover a discolored or poorly shaped tooth
How Does It Work?
Fitting a crown requires at least two office visits.
Initially, Dr. Sallustio or Dr. Azizian will remove the decay and old fillings and rebuild the tooth, if needed. Next, he will reduce the tooth sufficiently to allow for porcelain and/or metal crown. An impression of the tooth will be taken and sent to the lab for the fabrication of the crown. The lab will use the shade of porcelain selected by the doctor which matches the existing teeth. A temporary crown will be placed to cover the prepared tooth while the permanent crown is being fabricated.
On the subsequent visit, the temporary crown will be removed and the doctor will fit and adjust the final crown. The crown will then be cemented into place.

My dentist had me meet with Dr. Sallustio because I was dangerously close to my nerves due to years of grinding. Meeting Dr. Sallustio and his wonderful staff was amazing. I felt comfortable from the first meeting until the final procedure, well not final, I am going to see him every 6 months from now on. I had to get work done prior to the amazing Dr. doing his work on me, he sent me to Dr. Anthony Di Cesare in Red Bank. He is also an amazing doctor and his staff is equally warm and helpful and a lot of fun. I did not come to Dr. Sallustio for cosmetic work, I came because of my nerve condition. The technology used in his office is unbelievable, hard to explain. I never had to wait, I never was in pain, and 2 important things to me are, I don't have to worry about nerve damage because of his wonderful work and his staff and I laughed joked and had fun with each other making a MAJOR procedure for me so at ease, I actually looked forward going to the office. The final product is amazing and although I didn't come here for cosmetic work, my new smile is crazy, too many compliments. I thank you Dr. Sallustio, you are my Dr. and a friend to me now, your truly a brilliant Dr., you fixed me and made me feel at home in your office joking with me as you were performing your magic. Another thing about Dr. Sallustio that he won't tell you, is he has a blessing operating on babies and children with cleft lip and palate, donating his service for those in need. The entire staff at the office are equally wonderful, easy appointments, no waiting, all questions answered, and of course laughing and joking around with me the entire time, thank you all !!. I look forward to seeing you all for a long time. I want to thank my dentist Dr. Louis Sardelli who owns Dental Plaza in Passaic for sending me to Dr. Sallustio, thanks so much Dr. Lou !! For those reading this, if you have any dental concerns and your nervous, trust me make an appointment !!

After having a dental implant at another location, I found myself in a position where my implant was not positioned properly; this caused a problem with my permanent crown. The implant was for the last lower left molar in my mouth, so when the implant was placed too far back, the crown that my regular dentist inserted left a large space between the implant/crown and my next tooth(molar). To say the least, I was not happy. I came to Dr. Sallustio who immediately came up with a solution to my problem. He customized a crown to fit my implant that would alleviate the spacing problem. He was very professional and explained every detail of the procedure. Dr. Sallustio's goal was always to do his absolute best to make me happy. If I ever have to have another implant, my first stop will be at Dr. Sallustio's office.
