What Are Dental Implants?
Dental implants are metal titanium anchors that act as tooth root substitutes for missing teeth. They are surgically placed into the jawbone. Small posts are then attached to the implant. These posts protrude through the gums and provide stable foundations for artificial replacement teeth.
If, after examination and consultation with Dr. Sallustio, you feel that implant dentistry is the choice for you, an appointment for a surgical implant evaluation will be made with a highly qualified periodontist or oral surgeon. Your specific needs and considerations will be addressed and our team will work closely with you throughout the process.
Procedure
For most patients, the placement of a dental implant involves two surgical procedures. First, the implant is placed within your jawbone. For three to six months following surgery, the implant beneath the surface of the gums gradually integrates with the bone. A temporary replacement tooth at the implant site is often possible during this healing time. After the implant has integrated, the second phase begins. The periodontist or oral surgeon will uncover the implant and attach a small healing collar.
Dr. Sallustio will then begin making your new tooth. An impression of the implant will be taken and sent to the lab. At the next appointment, a post will be connected to the implant. A tooth replacement (a crown) is then cemented over the post. The entire procedure usually takes six to eight months. Most patients do not experience any disruption in their daily life. Multiple missing teeth may be successfully restored with implants.
The result is a strong, long lasting, natural looking replacement of a missing tooth.
